Largest project delivery in Ubitec’s history completed in Kemi

/  Ubitec

Ubitec Oy’s project delivery to Metsä Fibre’s new bioproduct mill in Kemi has been the largest in the history of the company, both in terms of scope and turnover. The Kemi bioproduct mill represents the largest investment in the history of the Finnish forest industry, and it started up in autumn 2023.

Ubitec’s project agreement included process and building electrification, as well as instrument installations in the process areas of the lime kiln, causticisation and bark gasification. The work included the installation of cable shelves, power cabling and process lighting, right up to the installation, testing and commissioning of process instruments. Ubitec’s scope of supply involves electrical and instrumentation installations of the parts delivered by Valmet, the main process technology supplier for the bioproduct mill.

The bioproduct factory project has been the largest single project delivery in the entire history of Ubitec. The company’s work in Kemi began in July 2022.

“Altogether nearly 100 professionals, both our own employees and our subcontractors, have been involved in the various phases of the project. Our delivery has included a very wide range of demanding entities related to the electrification and instrumentation of the facility’s process equipment, as well as building electrification and other building technology installations,” says Leo Nokelainen, Managing Director of Ubitec.

The Kemi bioproduct mill will produce 1.5 million tonnes of softwood and hardwood pulp per year, as well as many other bioproducts, such as biogas and biopellets. The mill does not use fossil fuels at all, and it will be completely waste-free by 2030 at the latest. As a side stream of production, it will also generate 2.0 TWh of renewable electricity annually, which corresponds to approximately 2.5 percent of Finland’s total electricity production.

“It is important to us that we have been able to participate in implementing a facility that uses the latest technology and where the circular economy is fully realised. It has been great to participate in one of Finland’s largest construction projects, and we are also proud that we managed to keep the project on schedule and enable the mill to start up as planned. A big thank you also goes to all our project partners for the great cooperation,” Nokelainen says.
